New page

Though the Venom Drinker had been cut down, the tree-mold which he had used to encase Robin remained. Ignis attempted to undo the spell as he had undone the caster, with a single, unforewarned swordblow. Robin was cut free, unharmed, but Ignis's misuse of the Invernus heraldic blade had caused its edge to dull.

Klaitos, Ekkels, and one of the remaining Venom drinkers climbed atop the fallen canopic mushroom. The cultist was unable to hit Klaitos with his poisonous spit, but provided enough covering fire to keep the storm giant away from getting past him and interrupting the remainder of the other Venom Drinker's ritual. Klaitos opted instead to hurl Ekkels into the fray.

Though Ekkels missed the other caster, he landed safely nearby. The man's hands were entangled in the writhing, sinewy fungal mass, allowing Ekkels to kick him squarely in the leg from behind. The spell was interrupted again, but the caster retailiated with a gob of venom, leaving Ekkels weakened.

Robin, shaking off the orange dust of the fungal trap, drew her crossbow and scored a grazing hit on the Venom Drinker confronting Klaitos. Realizing that they were badly outnumbered, he crouched low and began casting another spell. The grove of glowing mushrooms began to quiver in anticipation of another flare-burst. Ignis sprinted across it, hoping to close the distance and join the melee before he was blinded.

Klaitos, disinterested in getting covered in another layer of glowing spores, rushed the other Venom Drinker and tackled him out of the way, then dropped to the group beside the injured Ekkels. Robin finished the man off with a crossbow bolt to the chest, stilling the spell-animated mushrooms. Ekkels, though weakened by poison, tapped into the storm magic of the adjacent Klaitos. Channeling lightning through his hands, he electrocuted the last Venom Drinker, frying some of the canopic mushroom where it still encased his hands.

With the battle over, the party caught their breath and looked around. Lacking any other obvious exit, Klaitos bade Ignis burn a hole through the mushroom he had dropped on the doorway. He, Robin, and Ekkels studied the EK+ELS tree, but didn't notice anything obviously magical or special about it. The letters seemed amateurishly carved, and the ground beneath them scarred gray and barren, but nothing explained it or why Ekkels had been drawn here.

Robin, losing interest, followed her Bracelet of Greed to the pool of magebane, slightly receded in the sunlight. She found some suitable wood and lit a shoddy torch off of Ignis's stray flame. In the translucent depths of the lethal pond, she spied something gleaming, lying against the roots of the canopic mushroom shading the slime from the rest of the sun's light.

Elsewhere, Ekkels was approached by the errant Morgle, but it was more interested in the electricity-fried mushroom than anything else. He didn't sense any real hostility or interest in anything beyond food, and studied it a bit, but was unable to recollect anything that might help identify what kind of creature it actually was.

Ignis reached the collapsed stone wall behind the mushroom, smeared some glowing mushrooms against the walls of the tunnel he had burned, and called Klaitos over to finish the job. Klaitos reinforced the tunnel with some scavenged wood and tried to carefully move the collapsed rocks out, one chunk at a time. When the passage began to tremble, he used his bulk to simply slam it back into position.

Robin called over Ignis and Ekkels to help her retrieve the shiny object from the deadly pool of magebane. She and Ignis reasoned that a sufficient magic effect, carefully controlled, ought to let them "guide" the magebane up the sides of the towering mushroom at the center of the pond, thus lowering it enough to dredge her prize free. She fashioned a crude hook out of rope, dead wood, and rubble, and Ignis summoned a ring of fire to rise around the trunk of the fungus.

Sure enough, the magebane followed the magic upward. As the pool's depths became shallower, Ekkels spied a number of objects, too decayed to truly identify save for the Petalbearer's sigil, here and there. Robin flung her dredge as the fire-ring neared the top of the mushroom, and pulled the shining object into the sunlight to cleanse it of the remaining magebane. Ignis dismissed his spell, unintentionally causing the magebane to splash down and out from the central stalk. None of them were splattered, but Klaitos rejoined the group to find Robin telling off Ignis for his carelessness.

Robin's prize turned out to be a strange ceramic vessel, styled to resemble a golden walnut. It was slightly larger than a canteen, with something inside gently rattling but no clear hinge or means of getting it open. Nonetheless, her bracelet indicated it to be of value, and so she stowed it away as compensation for her trouble in coming here.

The party prepared to leave the ruined village. Ignis found the Morgle taking a post-meal nap on the last, unconscious Venom Drinker, and opted to coup de grace the cultist with his dulled sword. Since the creature itself didn't seem to exhibit any real hostility or non-food motivations. Ignis tried to bid it follow them out, promising to feed it. With no sign of comprehension or hesitation, the Morgle waddled after the man that had said the word "food" in front of it.
