New page

The party surveyed the corpse-stalked wastelands between the ruins and Golarth. They considered flying over the heads of the shambling masses preferable than trying to fight their way into the siege, but Heiras was against flying into the city airspace without knowing what had downed the other ships.

The group broke off from the Keep platoon and crept carefully into the wastes, taking a long route to hide from the undead in the craggy barrens farther from the city. They spied aimless undead meandering in the fields and the dusty land around the city, clustering with intent only at the walls and doors. They reached the field of crashed airships by late morning.

Robin and Klaitos crept closer, to study the hangar and the undead respectively, but the giant's attempt at stealth embarrased Robin to skulk beside. She borrowed the Lantern Eye and told him to stay behind. She studied the vast wall of the hangar, and considered the possibility of wrenching open the metal panels that sealed the ship-ports, but failed to discern any obvious weakness at so great a distance.

She then crept toward a lone undead near the downed ships and briefly shone the lantern eye at it. She could see the swirls of magic, hazy all around, with a concentrated brightness around the shambling figure, but wasn't sure what any of it actually meant or if she was using it correctly.

Robin regrouped with the party and they decided to try to lure out whatever force had crashed the airships littering the wastes before them. Robin cast a complex illusion of a Torch merchant ship appearing to fly in from the horizon, headed over the city walls. As it approached, a zombified green dragon emerged from the gray overcast sky and breathed a blindingly-bright flash at the "ship". Robin felt it try to interfere with her spell, and deftly "piloted" the vessel away from the zombie into a crashing descent.

The dragon returned to the clouds as the party considered their options for entering Golarth. Robin proposed sendng the Little Dudes to sdope out the hangar entrance, but Ekkels refused to put them in that kind of danger. Ignis suggested he be used as bait, saving his fire for when he needed to blast his way out, and the rest of the party could approach from another angle. The Ignis-weighted risk was deemed amenable, and so the party sprinted out of hiding in two groups.

Ignis was able to draw the attention of a swiftly-growing horde of shambling undead, their stumbling pace compensated for by their omnidirectional approach. Their howls attracted still more from further afield. A ghoulish undead leapt out from the wreckage of a ship to attack Ignis, but he was able to cut it down without breaking stride. As the mob began to surround him inescapably, he mantled his flame and blasted it forth, clearing his path for a few more paces but incurring the ire of screeching ghosts.

The roundabout path of Klaitos, Robin, and Ekkels covered more ground than Ignis's. While Ekkels and Klaitos were able to keep the pace, Robin found herself winded trying to keep up. Though some straggler undead attempted to attack them, Klaitos was able to smack them aside with ease using his giant maul. A group of skeletal soldiers briefly halted his advance, but he, Robin, and Ekkels made short work of them and rushed to the wall.

Ignis surrounded himself with a ring of fire and watched the mob of undead burn unflinchingly beyond. The smell and sight wrenched his gut, and the chorus of screaming zombies and screeching ghosts overhead assailed his ears. Lacking a real exit strategy, Ignis soaked grease into his cloak and lit it aflame. He then dropped the wall of fire and raced forward, relying on its consuming heat to destroy any wasteland-dried corpses that grabbed him. A lone ghost flew into his path and grazed his face with an unearthly touch, but the flames deterred it from draining his energy further.

The rest of the party reached the base of the hangar wall. Robin climbed to the lowest entrance as Klaitos and Ekkels fought off the undead swarming around them. She lodged a sturdy grappling hook in the top corner of the metal panel and tossed the rope to Klaitos. He found the wall tricky to scale, and so decided instead to pull the rope down. The force destroyed the hook and bent the side of the metal panel wide enough to pass through.

With a running start, and Robin's help, Klaitos made it into the hangar. Ekkels likewise scrambled up the rope. Ignis arrived last, discarding his flesh-singing robe, and barely scrambled up the rope as the rest of the party pulled him away from the horde he had been leading around.
