New page

The party, along with Captain Caegron, surrounded the surrendering woman. Robin, still nursing her ballista injury, offered to handcuff the woman. The captain, stubbornly untrusting, ordered a soldier to do it instead. Then, with his sword at her back, they tried to figure out why she had led the rioters to charge the gate, and if she would be willing to cooperate with their assault on the undead dragons - the party knew they could use a sharpshooter of her caliber. Ignis further proposed she join in sky combat as a shipside gunner.

She declared herself to be Angitt, leader of the Crimson Arrow mercenary guild, up until their recent annihilation. She claimed that her actions were to ensure her survival; she knew no Torch aid was coming and wagered that she could escape into the wastelands on foot, so long as there was a large enough mob with her to distract some of the undead.

Though willing to talk, she was resistant to any notion of aiding the party in their mission, or to Caegron's suggestion that she be jailed, arguing that either fate would simply mean her death. She pled to be turned loose so she could hole up somewhere secure. Robin recognized that Angitt was seriously afraid for her own survival - her cynicism wasn't faked, but her paranoid glances back in the direction of the illusory zombie breach betrayed her anxiousness.

Klaitos used this to argue that, since they had taken over the faction of mutineers at the Hangar, they had the food and resources to best ensure her survival. He also contended that, whether or not she believed in their plan, they actually had one, and were acting on it, which was better than her proposal of hiding from the undead hordes. She considered his argument and agreed to go along with the party - as anti-air support, on the ground - if they would trade her the location of the stockpile Klaitos mentioned.

His diplomacy achieved, Klaitos asked Captain Caegron if he'd be willing to dispatch some men to bring the hot air balloons, and the group of military engineers, from the eastern wall to meet with them at the Hangar. He agreed, but warned the group not to let Angitt slip their grasp in his absense. He staggered back through the Plaza, dispatching orders as he left.

Klaitos and Ignis escorted Angitt as Robin led the group through the Scales District. The fires throughout the city glowed beyond the overlarge buildings, illuminating the massive tortured faces flowing through the umbral cloud above.

Robin heard a strange thumping ahead, and bade the party wait as she scouted. She found a march of scattered undead - part-dragon residents of the Scales District, mixed with the smaller bodies of more common folk. The thumping turned out to be zombified pack lizard lurched forward slowly on three limbs, smacking into the ground with every step. Though there was no formation to speak of, the undead followed the main road inexorably towards Lord's Town.

Robin reported back to the group, and they found an unlit alley a few blocks down through which they could stealthily approach the main road. When the undead were far enough away, Robin led the group in a silent dash through the most shadowy part of the street.

Further on, they found the neighborhood just north of the Scales District to be consumed in a massive blaze. The smoke and heat choked them as they drew near. Lacking the time or directions to find a way around, Klaitos conjured an envelope of wind to protect their skin and lungs. Robin found a low-lying path between collapsing buildings that took them to the comparative safety of the Warehouse District.

As they emerged and caught their breath, Ekkels, from the safety of Klaitos's backpack, spied an indistinct figure emerge from the flames a few paces behind them before slipping out of sight.
