New page

Above the plaza, the hunched silk-masked figure regrouped from the momentary disorientation of Ekkels's Spatial Exchange, and attempted to slip back into the shadows of the Stormjumper's deck. However, Ekkels, though still piloting the ship, kept an eye on the hostile stowaway and tracked him to his hiding place.

Across the battlefield, the zombie army continued to surge forth from the main road. In the clearing near the plaza, the burly steel-masked figure was unable to advance on Klaitos under the barrage of undead projectiles. Changing tactics, he positioned himself between the giant and the unmoving bodies of Lord Arva and Torrix, then smashed his feet into the road to stabilize his footing.

The gold-masked woman, affronted by Ignis's flatulent attack, leapt to the highest point of the ship. She glared down at him, but Ignis was able to again resist the life-draining magic in that glare, causing her to let out a low curse in an ancient language. Ignis re-ignited his fire magic and filled the air with strobing flares. While she was momentarily dazzled, he scrambled headlong up the ship to position himself in her blind spot.

Ekkels activated the Stormjumper's cruise control and dove off the side of the ship, directly over the burning corpses of Urtholon and the Onyx prince. The silk-masked Figure, taken by surprise, was not fast enough to stop him. Ekkels locked eyes with the silk-masked figure as he went overboard, and used Spatial Exchange to swap places. Ekkels hit the deck with a thud, and the figure plummeted, landing impaled on a burning dragon-rib. Ekkels reassumed his position at the wheel and brought the ship low to look for Klaitos or Robin, though at a glance all he saw were zombies.

Meanwhile, Robin, following the pull of her Bracelet of Greed, affixed a rope to a crossbow bolt and fired it across the road, then clambered across the makeshift zipline. Klaitos, watching her sneak into a dangerous situation, decided to hold his position as a distraction. As he punted zombified body parts away from him, he asked the steel-masked figure after his identity and goals. To his surprise, the figure responded, in a hoarse, low, toneless voice. He claimed to serve, and to have always served, the Regalia Eternal, rulers of the Gray Steps. He offered little additional information, however, and demanded that Klaitos submit for execution in order to join the ranks of the undead.

While they conversed, Robin dropped into the clearing, and swiped Lord Arva's necklace - a dull-looking piece bearing the crest of House Siroon, a practical symbol of his noble position. However, she found that the Bracelet was tugging in a new direction. Puzzled, she followed it to a lightly-rippling mud puddle between Arva and Torrix. She fished out a ring she had seen Arva wearing - jet black where it wasn't mud-stained, wriggling autonomously in her grasp. Her bracelet pulled her further, and she saw another ripple a few paces away.

As soon as she held the ring, the Steel-Masked figure ripped his embedded feet free from the road and turned to charge at her. Robin feinted, then evaded the massive tackle, sliding in the mud to position herself behind him. In the moment of tumult, though, Arva's ring twitched and fell into the mud once more.

Ekkels saw Angitt and the Lizardman on a mission and flew low to offer them a ride. The Lizardman clung to the side of the ship while Angitt climbed on board. She showed Ekkels their target: a lone zombie that appeared to be being puppeted by a swarm of scales.

Klaitos, having failed to keep the man's attention off his ally, noticed the zombies around the clearing turn to rush at him. He abandoned his position and strategy, dodged the zombies and zombie parts bearing down on him, and charged at the steel-masked man. On the way, he vaulted over Torrix's bulk, stepped on Lord Arva's broken body, and attempted to lariat the steel-masked man. However, the muddy obstacle course had robbed him of momentum, and the man's armor hurt his arm.

Robin stepped away from the melee to find the ring she had just lost. It fell still and hidden at her approach, but she took one of Torrix's spiked metal braces to rake the road-muck for it. Following her Bracelet of Greed, she fished it and its twin out of the muck, and tied them to an improvised necklace. She then summoned an illusion of the gold-masked woman at the edge of the clearing, demanding that the steel-masked figure stand down. He pointed an axe at the illusion and demanded that "the imposter" submit herself for execution.

Ignis grappled the gold-masked woman as she regained her vision. He seized her mask and pulled it off her head, tossing it into the darkness. Underneath was a gray-skinned, unblemished woman's face, with an elegant yet unnerving beauty. She turned back to grin and accuse him of being forward, and he saw that her eyes had been replaced with glittering black gems.
